February is Full of Pink and Red but Your Face Doesn’t Have to Be

One of the most common skin conditions in the United States is Rosacea, effecting more than 14 million people. Many people associate Rosacea with a reddening or pinking of the face but it can also cause face swelling and visible blood vessels. These signs are only the external signs; people who suffer from Rosacea may feel like their skin is sunburned, dry, sensitive or scaly.

You might be thinking, who gets Rosacea? Well, anyone can but people with fair skin usually of Celtic or Scandinavian ancestry are more prone. Also, those between the ages of 30- 50, history of acne, or those whose parent(s) suffer are also more likely to have Rosacea. Dermatologist and scientist aren’t 100% sure what causes this skin condition but there are a few trends prevalent such as family history, a bacteria called bacillus oleronius that causes the immune system to overreact and a protein that normally protects the skin is processed differently causing the redness.

The Ins and Outs of Contact Dermatitis

If you’ve ever experienced irritated and inflamed skin you have probably experienced a condition called contact dermatitis. There are two main causes for contact dermatitis; allergic reaction or contact with an irritant chemical. We know these conditions are uncomfortable and often times unsightly so we’re here to help.

Let’s start by explaining the two types of contact dermatitis:

Allergic Contact Dermatitis- We are exposed to more chemicals then we could ever imagine each day. From the soap and shampoo we clean ourselves with to the dyes and materials in the clothes we wear. Allergic contact dermatitis is caused when your skin is exposed to a chemical that you’ve previously become sensitized to. The skin exposed to the chemical will appear reddish in color, feel irritated and appear scaly. If you feel this allergic reaction is happening to you, a doctor can easily test you with a patch test. With over 3,000 environmental allergens known to cause this reaction, you’re bound to experience contact dermatitis at some point in your life.

Irritant Contact Dermatitis- The basics of Irritant contact dermatitis is chemical exposure to the skin that causes damage to the skin. It can be acute exposure such as strong solvents or non-corrosive acids to cumulative exposure meaning repeated exposure to irritating chemicals to 3^rd degree chemical burns. The severity of the irritation is based on the individual’s skin. Those in contact with chemicals frequently, such as cleaning professionals often experience red, scaly, blotchy and irritated skin known as Irritant contact dermatitis.

Don’t Be a Worry Wart

Warts...These skin growths while not cancerous or super dangerous are contagious and their appearance annoy most. Warts appear when the HPV virus infects the upper layer of the skin usually through in open cut or wound. It’s pretty easy to spot a wart on your body because they are typically skin colored but rough and appear raised. Dr. Germain will be able to determine if a marking on your skin is a wart by simply looking at it.

While most of you know what warts look like you might be asking who, what and why?

Anyone can be exposed to the wart virus but there are a few demographics that are more prone. Those who have weakened immune systems, children and teens as well as those who bite their nails or pick hangnails are more likely to have warts. Children are more prone to have cuts and scrapes making it easier for the HPV virus to infect them, causing warts.

Sometimes warts go away without treatment, especially for children patients. It does typically take longer for warts to disappear in adults so treatment from a dermatologist is usually the best course of action. It is important to treat your warts since they spread so quickly by touch or by touching any object that’s been in contact with the wart. There are multiple ways to treat a wart such as freezing it, with cantharidin and burning it are just a few common treatments.

Lengthen Those Lashes

Do you suffer from a lack of eyelashes or do you think your lashes are too short? If so, you’re in luck, as a solution called Latisse may be able to help you.

A beautiful, youthful appearance comes from within. Sometimes rejuvenating that appearance requires more than just topical treatments to address the loss of facial volume. One of the more popular, non-surgical cosmetic procedures that can replace that lost volume is dermal fillers.

Dermal fillers are used to smooth out and create volume in areas of the skin that have aged and wrinkled over time. Living in the Lowcountry, we all know that we have to protect our skin from sunburns and other skin conditions, but did you know that during these humid summer months, your skin may also develop blackheads?

A blackhead is a yellow or blackish bump or plug on the skin that is a type of acne. Contrary to the common belief that it is caused by poor hygiene, blackheads are caused by excess oils that mix with the skin.

Feeling Itchy? The Scoop on Poison Ivy

As the weather gets warmer, many residents of the Lowcountry love to spend their free time camping or hiking in the woods. While this can be a fun family activity, it is important to beware of poison ivy.

Poison ivy can cause rashes and in severe cases swelling and severe blisters. The rash is caused by an oil found in the plant known as urushiol. The itchy, blistering rash often does not start right away. Generally it takes 12 to 72 hours after the oil comes into contact with a persons skin before the rash appears. It is not uncommon for a persons skin not to develop a rash after the first time their skin comes into contact with the urushiol. The next time it happens though, the skin will more than likely be more sensitive and the common symptoms for poison ivy will occur.

There are a few ways to get this rash:

Direct Contact: By simply touching the poison ivy, you can get a rash. Every part of the plant – the leaves, stems, roots, and flowers – contains the oil.

Indirect Contact: Urushiol can stick to almost anything. For example, if you touch a gardening tool or even your pet’s fur that happens to have the oil on it, you can get a rash. It is important to be careful so as not to have anything come into contact with poison ivy.

Airborne Contact: While burning these poisonous plants may seem like a good idea, doing so will release particles of urushiol into the air, which can stick to the skin.

Poison ivy is not contagious either. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, it is not possible to get this rash from touching someone who has the rash. This is because the skin absorbs the oil too quickly. You cannot get a rash from getting the fluid in the blisters on your skin.

Most people see the rash go away naturally in a few weeks. There are a number of things that a person can do to make the skin feel more comfortable during this time though. This includes applying hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to the rash, taking antihistamine pills, placing cool cloths on the skin, taking cool showers or lukewarm baths, and most importantly not scratching the areas of the skin where the rash is.

Anyone that gets a rash from one of these poisonous plants should wash all articles of clothing that they were wearing when they came into contact with the plant as well as washing anything else that may have come into contact with the plant. This includes things like sports equipment and gardening tools.

One of the best ways to prevent poison ivy rashes is knowing what the plant looks like so you can avoid it altogether. On these plants, there are three small leaflets on each leaf. In the Lowcountry, it grows on a vine. In the Spring, the plant grows yellow-green flowers. It also may have green berries that turn off-white in early fall.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, a person should use a skin care product that helps prevent the skin from absorbing the urushiol to prevent a rash from poison ivy. These products usually contain bentoquatam. It is also recommended that you wear long pants, long sleeves, boots, and gloves when around these plants.

While most of these rashes go away without treatment in a few weeks, it is important to seek treatment if you have one or more of these reactions:

· The itching doesn't go away.

· You have rashes on several areas of your body.

· You have a fever.

· Your face swells.

· Breathing or swallowing is difficult.

In these instances it is best to seek treatment from Dr. Germain and her staff immediately.

Lighten Up! The skinny on Melasma

With summer rapidly approaching, it is important that residents of the Lowcountry protect themselves against skin conditions. While many people are aware of conditions such as melanoma, not many are aware of the more common condition known as melasma.

Melasma is a common skin problem that causes brown to gray-brown patches on the face. It is common for most people to get it on their cheeks, the bridge of their nose, forehead, chin, or above their upper lip. In rare instances, it can appear on other parts of the body that gets lots of sun, such as the forearms and neck. Statistics show that women are much more likely to get melasma than men. In fact, it is so common during pregnancy that it is sometimes referred to as the “mask of pregnancy”.

Studies have also shown that people with darker skin, such as those of Latin/Hispanic, North African, African-American, Asian, Indian, Middle Eastern, and Mediterranean descent are more likely to get melasma. It is not life threatening, however many people dislike the way melasma makes their skin look.

Common melasma triggers include:

Sun Exposure: Ultraviolent (UV) light from the sun can stimulate the melanocytes. In fact, just a small amount of sun exposure can make melasma return after fading, which is why melasma is often worse in the summer. It is also why many people with melasma get it multiple times.

A change in hormones: Pregnant women often get melasma. When it appears in pregnant women, it is called or chloasma or the “mask of the pregnancy”. Birth control pills and hormone replacement medicine can also trigger melasma.

Cosmetics: Skin care products that irritate the skin may worsen melasma.

Many people hit the beach in Charleston this weekend, from Isle of Palms to Folly Beach, the lure of the lulling sounds of the ocean is quite the aphrodisiac. We know that hitting the beach is one of the most relaxing things that people in the Lowcountry do, but we just want you to know that if you do spend a little too much time out there, you should know what to look for.

Sunburn:

A sunburn usually appears within a few hours after sun exposure and may take several days or longer to fade. Intense sun exposure that results in sunburn increases your risk of certain complications and related skin diseases. These include dry, wrinkled skin, liver spots, actinic keratoses, and skin cancer, including melanoma.

You can prevent sunburn and the related skin conditions by protecting your skin whenever you're outdoors, even on cloudy days.

Sun poisoning also know as Photodermatitis:

Photodermatitis is an abnormal skin reaction to sunlight, or more specifically to ultraviolet rays. It occurs when your immune system reacts to UV rays.

You may develop a rash, blisters, or scaly patches. Some of the symptoms include:

itchy bumps, blisters, or raised areas, Lesions that resemble eczema, outbreaks in areas of skin exposed to light, pain, redness, swelling, chills, headache, fever, and nausea. Almost sounds like the flu!

Certain areas of your body are extra sensitive so you need to be careful in places like your lips which sometimes includes a burning sensation in the lips, hot feeling, cracked lips, and the skin of the lip will be sensitive. Blisters and the changing of color of your lips may occur.

The skin on your eyelids is very sensitive and thin, so make sure you wear wrap-around sunglasses to protect your eyes. Take care of your largest organ ~ the skin!

So the next time you head out to the beaches or on the water, just remember to practice sun safety. Your skin will thank you for it!

Celebrating National Women's Health Week

This week is National Women's Health Week, a weeklong health observance coordinated by the U.S. Department of Health and

Human Services' Office on Women's Health.

All too often we see women who don't take time out of their hectic schedules to take care of themselves...from soccer practices to ballet rehearsals for the kids, there just doesn't seem like enough time in the day...and even if you don't have children, doesn't it seem you can barely make it home in time to have dinner most nights? We completely understand and most of us run the same rat race with you...which is why it's imperative that weeks like National Women's Health Week be observed.

From scheduling your mammogram to your yearly skin check, this is a week to remind you that you work very hard and not to take your health for granted. It's funny when the kids or our significant others get sick, we immediately call the doctor or tend to them right away but when we feel a little sniffle, we brush it off. It's OK to be tough, it's OK to work hard but don't forget to take care of number one...you!

Monday is Melanoma Monday. This day was designated by the American Academy of Dermatology to raise awareness about melanoma and encourage early detection. This day isn't meant to scare people and have them shut all their blinds and live in a sunless world, it's meant to educate people to understand to do self skin exams at home and be vigilant about getting yearly skin checks and practicing sun safety.

If caught early, melanoma is treatable but if left alone, it can be fatal. Unfortunately, we seen patients who have turned a blind eye to it, when it could have been as easy as coming in for a check. Staying Safe in the Sun

Are you hitting the beach this summer? Then read on...

Beach season is almost here. Yesterday, the high was already 90 degrees in Charleston, and many are hitting the water and beaches to soak up the sun. But before you head outside, know some sun safety tips that can help you.

Skin cancer is the most common form of all cancers and it accounts for nearly half of all cancers in the US. More than 2 million cases of non-melanoma skin cancer are found in this country each year.

Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer but if it's caught and treated early, it's almost always curable. However, if you wait too long, the cancer can spread to other parts of the body where it becomes hard to treat and can be fatal.

The American Cancer Society estimates that at present, about 120,000 new cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the US in a year. In 2010, about 68,130 of these were invasive melanomas...in 38,870 males and 29,260 females. So ladies, just like you're vigilant about putting on the SPF please make sure your boyfriend or husband or significant other is too.

These statistics aren't here to scare you, they're here to help you understand that taking care of your skin in vital. So follow these simple tips....

Sun safety tips:

-The sun’s rays are the strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. so avoid the sun at these times if possible.

-If you do venture out during those hours, be sure to cover up with long-sleeved shirts and pants. There’s a variety of wide-brimmed hats that look very fashionable if you’re on the beach or lake. Use a beach umbrella and wear sunglasses with UV protection. Read The Skin Cancer Foundation's

on maintaining your summer style in the sun.

-A lifetime of sun exposure can cause wrinkles, freckles, age spots and rough, dry skin so when you are outside, seek shade. Practice the shadow rule and teach it to children. If your shadow is shorter than you, the sun’s rays are at their strongest.

-Use sunscreen that’s SPF 30 or higher when you're in the sun. Apply generous amounts of broad-spectrum sunscreen with physical block at least 30 minutes before going outdoors and reapply every two hours, especially after heavy sweating or after being in the water.

-If you are near water or sand, use extra caution as they reflect the damaging rays of the sun and can increase your chance for sunburn.

-If you notice any changes in your skin, make an appointment to see your dermatologist.

Baseball season is almost here and you're probably scratching your head asking why I'm talking about baseball when usually I'm blogging about dermatology...well, on Saturday, May 7th dermatology and baseball will come together for a great night as Germain Dermatology teams up with the Charleston RiverDogs to present Women's Wellness Night on Saturday, May 7 at 7:05pm at the Joe Riley Stadium.

The entire staff at Germain Dermatology is thrilled to be a part of the Women's Wellness Night and will be on hand to inform folks about the importance of taking care of their skin. Also, another reason we really wanted to get involved is that we care about Women's Wellness and May is Melanoma Awareness Month. With so many fans visiting the baseball fields across the country this summer, it's crucial for them to take care of their skin and use sunscreen. Here's some facts about melanoma from the Melanoma Research Foundation.

If not caught early, melanoma is known to be the most deadly of all skin cancers.

Melanoma can be successfully removed and monitored by regular skin screenings in its early stages. However, the disease is deadly in its most advanced stages as few treatment options exist. The median lifespan for patients with advanced melanoma is less than one year.

The statistics around melanoma are astounding:

One-in-50 Americans has a lifetime risk of developing melanoma.
In 2009 nearly 63,000 were diagnosed with melanoma in the United States, resulting in approximately 8,650 deaths.
The projected numbers for 2010 are even higher with 68,130 diagnosis and 8,700 deaths.

This means that every eight minutes, someone in the United States will be given a melanoma diagnosis and that every hour someone will die from the disease.

Melanoma is the fastest growing cancer in the United States and worldwide.

The American Cancer Society estimates that the risk of developing invasive melanoma in the United States is 1 in 41 and 1 in 61 for men and women, respectfully.
The incidence of people under 30 developing melanoma is increasing faster than any other demographic group, soaring by 50 percent in young women since 1980.
Melanoma primarily affects individuals in the prime years of life and is the most common form of cancer for young adults 25-29 years old and the second most common cancer in adolescents and young adults 15-29 years old.
Although melanoma is most common in Caucasians, melanoma can strike men and women of all ages, all races and all skin types. The mean age for diagnosis of melanoma is 50, while for many other cancers it is 65-70 years old.

Diving into Dysport

Long before Juan Ponce De Leon, people have been searching for the fountain of youth. Funny when we were in our 20s & 30s, we often didn’t take the proper care of our skin like we should have, and now as we reach our 40s, 50s, 60s and so on...we work hard to nourish our skin and bring it back to the way it was in our 20s and 30s. If only we would have known then, what we know now or at least would have listened!

With advancements in education and science, we’ve learned the importance of sun protection and regular skin checks. Having a good relationship with your dermatologist is key because your skin is your largest organ, so taking care of it is vital.

But just as education and science has improved, so has our knowledge in the cosmetic dermatology side of things. Not only does our office see many patients for medical dermatology, often our patients inquire about some of the latest procedures today that can take years off your looks.

Recently, one of our patients in her mid 30s had a strong set of 11s in between her brows. Every time she would sit down to write a story or get stressed under deadline, she would scrunch her eyebrows together when she concentrated, leaving two fairly deep wrinkles that even stuck around when she wasn’t stressed. She also had crow’s feet surrounding her eyes. After living for years out West as a snowboarder, the harsh sun and winter weather really affected the skin around her delicate eyes. To say she was nervous to try anything would be an understatement, which is completely understandable!

We make sure that we have a complete consultation with each patient so they understand any risks when undergoing any procedure in our office. Fun in the Sun

Beach season is just around the corner and with the weather in the high 70s today in the Charleston, folks are already pulling out the shorts and tank tops but along with this warm weather comes some things to think about.

1. Apply Sunscreen Daily

Be sure that you’re applying sunscreen before you head out the door every day and make sure that they contain physical blockers like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These minerals are used in physical blocks and sit on top of your skin and reflect the rays of the sun, shielding what's underneath. Look for chemical blockers that provide complete protection from both UVA and UVB rays, and apply at least 30 minutes before heading outdoors, so the chemicals have enough time to soak into the skin and protect your skin. Loving Your Heart

February is American Heart Month and although, I’m a board certified dermatologist and not a cardiologist, I’m still a big believer in taking care of our entire body and think that we all don’t pay enough attention to our heart. It’s what keeps our blood pumping and does everything from helping our cheeks get a rosy glow when we blush to allowing us to power through a night of hard core hip hop dancing with Angel Roberts at her Peace Love and Hip Hop classes.

Heart disease is the # 1 killer of American women and unfortunately 1 in every 3 women dies of heart disease. The scary part of it all is that nearly two-thirds of American women who die suddenly of a heart attack had no prior symptoms.

We can lower their risk of heart disease by as much as 82% just by leading a healthy lifestyle. Risk factors you can change are: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, being overweight and being physically inactive. However there are some risk factors you cannot change like a family history of heart disease, Age (55 or older for women) and race or ethnicity. More than 35% of American women are overweight and more than 25% of American women are still smoking...(which also takes a toll on your skin!) and these factors weigh heavily into the situation.

The signs and symptoms of heart disease may differ between women and men.The most common symptom of heart attack in men and women is chest pain or discomfort. But unfortunately, only half of women who have heart attacks have chest pain.

Some signs from women experiencing a heart attack:

Back or neck pain, indigestion, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, extreme fatigue or problems breathing. They can also experience upper body discomfort in one or both arms, the jaw, or the stomach. Other symptoms of heart attack are lightheadedness and fainting, which occur more often in women than men.

In the end, just like taking care of your skin, taking care of your heart requires a healthy lifestyle and exercise. So incorporate a variety of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains into your diet and make sure your diet is low in saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, sodium and added sugar. It may seem a little difficult at first but once you get on track, you will feel great! So love your heart and it will love you back!

Rosacea

It’s a common skin condition that we see in our office weekly, and it’s believed to affect more than 14 million Americans....Rosacea. Usually it starts to appear on places like your chin, nose, cheeks and forehead. But unlike other skin conditions, rosacea usually appears between the ages of 30-50 and sorry ladies, but it affects you more than men. The occurrence of rosacea is about three times more in women, than it is in men.

At first, it may seem like a sunburn that doesn’t seem to go away and you may flush more often. Small bumps called papules may grow and pustules may form. Unfortunately, there is no cure for rosacea but once you are aware of what triggers it and on a proper regimen, your condition is manageable. There are plenty of celebrities that live with rosacea including former President Bill Clinton, Cameron Diaz and Renee Zellweger and they all look fabulous and so can you.

The National Rosacea Society, which conducted a rosacea survey, discovered that close to 70% of Americans with rosacea felt a low self-esteem, while more than 40 percent began shying away from meeting people because of embarrassment. If you start to notice the symptoms of rosacea, don’t wait to make your appointment with us.

Symptoms of Rosacea:

~Flushing and facial redness

~Bumps or pimples on the skin, either small and solid (papules) or pus-filled (pustules)

~Stinging sensations that may be more noticeable when smiling, frowning, or squinting Cleansers, cosmetics, or other facial products may increase the irritation

~Thickening of the skin of the nose

Like I mentioned above, knowing what triggers your rosacea is key...there’s some factors that many people seem to fall under like exposure to the extreme heat and cold conditions, spicy food, alcohol and some medicines and cosmetics.
