Symptoms of the Season

Tis’ the season of merriment and joy, friends and family, vacations and entertaining, but along with those come the dreaded cold, dry weather. This time of year can be wonderful for your spirit but wreck havoc on your skin.  Many people with perfectly healthy skin suffer from itching, redness, dry patches and peeling during the colder months; and those with regularly dry skin suffer severely.

Here in Charleston our skin becomes used to the humid, moist air and gets especially dry and tight in our colder months. There are certain things you can do to ease the bothersome symptoms of the season and begin spring with beautiful healthy skin.

One of the easiest fixes is to stay hydrated. This time of year we are making rounds at holiday parties, eating less than good for you foods, and enjoying a round or two of cheer. All of these festive traditions can make you dehydrated which not only affects your health on the inside, but will also affect your skin. Make sure to drink plenty of water in between all the holiday fun.

You also need to stay moisturized. Many of you probably use moisturizer each morning, but increasing this routine can save your skin during these bitter months. Make sure to moisturize your face as soon as you have cleansed, replenishing vital nutrients and oils back into your skin.  For the rest of your body you can use body oil after showering. Oils hold in moisture better than regular lotions keeping your skin moist longer through your day; they also keep water from evaporating from your skin so it is important to apply within the first few minutes from drying off from your shower or bath.

When taking a shower or bath limiting your time to 15 minutes or under and turning your dial down to a warm temperature, rather than hot, can also help decrease the occurrence of dry skin.  The hotter and longer you are in the shower or bath the more oils are depleted from your skin resulting in drier areas. Also, make sure to use gel or cream cleansers rather than bar soaps. Best rule of thumb, according to Mayo Clinic, is to find a cleanser (for face and body) that leaves your skin feeling clean and smooth not tight or dry.

Your hands, nails and cuticles also suffer this time of year. It is just as important to moisturize your hands after washing as it is your face. If you don’t wear dish gloves this time of the year may be a good time to try them out. Dish gloves can prevent dry hands as well as brittle nails. If the weather is causing dry cuticles make sure to cut them, not tear them, and use a good cuticle oil daily.

Taking good care of your skin from head to toe during the colder seasons will help you to have glowing, healthy skin come warmer weather. If you feel your symptoms are severe and taking slight precautions aren’t helping contact your dermatologist for a consult on dry skin, there could be a more severe problem.

Tis’ the season to be beautiful!

Men's skin needs TLC, too!

Traditionally when we think of skin care and cosmetic procedures we think of women, but that’s not always the case. There are hundreds of skin care products and procedures today geared toward men, but most men still have a certain stigma of using products- they shouldn't skin care and even cosmetic procedures are just as beneficial and preventative for men as they are for women! Just because men have the persona of being rough and rugged doesn't mean their skin is too.

For example men’s skin ages just as easily as women’s and it’s reported that only 5% of men use sunscreen on a daily basis. For men and women alike using sunscreen daily (usually within a moisturizer) is the number one method to prevent premature aging, not to mention skin cancer. Men also seem to complain about adult acne. The proper shaving technique, a cleanser for their skin type and a good moisturizer will fix the common problems of adult acne in a pinch (While also lying of the booze, staying dehydrated and keeping a distance from unhealthy greasy foods doesn't hurt.).  Using a bar of soap from head to toe just doesn't cut it.

There are also some great cosmetic procedures men can benefit from. Men, much more so than the average woman, constantly deal with the issue of excessive body hair. Laser hair removal is a perfect solution to this problem. It’s non-evasive, perfect for large areas of hair (ie: shoulders, back, chest) and helps reduce the amount of hair that grows back. Not to mention it is much less painful than waxing and much less of a task than trying to shave all those awkward areas. Laser hair removal is also an option for men who have severe or constant irritation when shaving facial hair.

On the opposite end most men don’t know that a dermatologist is the number one doctor to see for hair loss. A dermatologist can best determine the treatment for the hair loss, provided it is not caused by a deeper medical issue. Testosterone blocking medications and transplants are among the most popular treatments.

It’s also becoming more and more acceptable for men to use Botox, facial fillers and chemical peels. There is no shame in visiting your dermatologist for more than just a skin check. You would be surprised at what they could do for you, and what simple changes to your skin routine could do for your skin health!

Looking into Laser Hair Removal

Whether it’s on your arms, face or bikini line hairiness is something most women feel self conscious about and some men too.  Depending on the density and color of your hair and, most importantly, the location of the growth it can put a sincere damper on one’s self image. Luckily with today’s technology and education dermatologists can do much to decrease or eliminate this unwanted hair.  Most popular among clients is laser hair removal. This process is innovative and non-evasive, not to mention saves you time and relentless effort. These treatments show results immediately, but do usually take an average of five sessions for best results (depending on the size of the area being targeted and your personal body this can differ).
What is it:
Laser hair removal became commercially available in 1990, and has grown exponentially over the past 22 years. Hair removal lasers are approved by the FDA for ‘permanent’ hair removal.  “Laser hair removal is a technique that uses beams of highly concentrated light to penetrate the hair follicles. The light is absorbed by pigment in the follicles and destroys the hair within them. Laser hair removal is among the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the U.S,” via WebMD. The process will permanently reduce the amount of hairs grown, but not permanently prevent all hair growth.
The Procedure:
Laser hair removal in the Charleston, South Carolina area is performed with GentleYAG® and GentleLASE® lasers, and is appropriate for both light-skinned and dark-skinned individuals. The procedure causes only slight discomfort. As the laser is passed over the targeted area, patients will feel a brief, slight "snap," like a rubber band against the skin.

After Treatment:
The treated area may be red and possibly swollen for about 24 hours after the procedure. Ice packs can help reduce swelling and alleviate any discomfort. You should avoid sun exposure and glycolic or salicylic acid products for a period of several days after treatment.

Many women suffer from unwanted hairiness however the condition can be more than just an issue of appearance. Hirsutism is a condition of ‘male pattern’ hair growth in women, i.e.: face, back or chest. This condition can be a sign of more severe medical concerns. The cause of this hair growth could be because of a high amount of male hormone- androgens- primarily testosterone, or due to a body’s over sensitivity to hair follicles. New studies are also showing higher levels of insulin in women with this condition. If you have an excessive amount of body hair in targeted areas that are not common for woman pattern growth, not common for your family/ethnic traits, and developed after the pubescent period you may want to discuss your concerns with your dermatologist and/or physician.  There may be a solution to your cosmetic concerns and for your health!

If you are just one of the ‘lucky’ few who have a little extra growth, or you just don’t have the time to deal with the hair you have, ask us about our laser hair removal!

And during the month of November with the purchase of a bikini hair removal package you can get an underarm removal package for FREE ($600 value)! Only a couple weeks left to get in on the great deal!

Have You Had Your Yearly Check-Up?

Have you noticed any changes in your skin since the start of the summer? Maybe some new freckles, brown spots, or just a few new signs of aging? These can all be symptoms from our lovely friend the Sun. No matter how many precautions we take or how sun-safe we are UV-rays can still affect us in ways we don’t even realize.

It is just as important to receive a yearly skin check with your dermatologist as it is for you to get a routine physical. After months of fun in the sun, vacations and play it’s a perfect time to get your yearly check. Your risk of getting skin cancer is real. Current estimates are
that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

Just like other cancers, you can learn to spot signs and detect problems from home. SkinCancer.org has great information for helping you self-evaluate your body before your check up, and to detect any changes during the year as prevention.
The best tool is to be educated-know your body and how your skin appears, note any changes, itchy spots or anything irregular and let your dermatologist know.

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. Basal cell and squamous cell cancers are less serious types and make up 95% of all skin cancers. Also referred to as non-melanoma skin cancers, they are highly curable when treated early. Melanoma, made up of abnormal skin pigment cells called melanocytes, is the most serious form of skin cancer and causes 75% of all skin cancer deaths. Left untreated, it can spread to other organs and is difficult to control. *Courtesy of
http://www.medicinenet.com

Aside from skin cancer, which is the number one risk, over-exposure to the sun builds up over time causing wrinkles, brown spots and leathery skin. Visiting your dermatologist doesn't only help to prevent skin cancer, but it can also help to eliminate signs from past sun damage. The beauty of it all is whenever you start taking the correct precautions against the sun you can actually reverse the effects, or at least some of them (not to mention stop any additional damage)!

If you have spent a little too much time unprotected in the sun start
eliminating those weary signs with some simple tips at home:
1- Exfoliate: Everyone’s skin is different and should exfoliate accordingly follow your dermatologist’s recommendations and slough off your damaged and dead skin cells safely and efficiently.
2- Moisturize: Even oily skin needs to stay hydrated, find the right moisturizer for use and use it correctly. This will help even skin tone and reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and leathery texture.
2- Wear sunscreen year round and daily: SPF 45 or higher is recommended, luckily most moisturizers and foundations have SPF in them now!
4- Use a topical Antioxidant Cream: Use of a good topical cream can renew your skin’s neutral balance, look for ones rich in vitamin C and collagen to replenish your skin’s natural elasticity.

Depending on the severity of the damage and your own personal experience other treatments can be used such as in office microdermabrasion, chemical peels or skin resurfacing.  Germain Dermatology offers an entire line of products geared toward sun damage, as well as anti-aging. Come by the office or visit us online anytime to learn about the products or to make an appointment for your yearly check-up.
Be educated. Use precaution. Get your yearly skin check.

First time seeing a Dermatologist? Know what to expect!
When you see a dermatologist for a complete skin checkup, expect a 10-15-minute visit, including a review of your medical history and a head-to-toe skin examination. This is a good time to ask about any spots you are worried about; your dermatologist can educate you about what to look for, such as any changes in the size, color, borders, or shape of a mole. Typically, a spot that the doctor suspects is cancerous will be biopsied. During a biopsy, a sliver of tissue is removed for evaluation by a pathologist, who confirms (or refutes) the dermatologist’s suspicions.

Safely Prolong Your Summer Glow

Spray Tan? Tanning Beds? Bronzers? Selfless Tanners?
Which is the best venue to prolong your glow?

With Kids back in school, schedules busier than ever and beach season coming to an end we all are starting to lose our beautiful sun-kissed glows that we’ve so proudly earned (Only after applying the proper amounts of sunscreen of course.).  It’s a fact that sun lightened hair and bronzed skin tones are a signature for being a Charlestonian, and it is a beautiful sight, only when earned safely; and like all great things this too does fade.
This is the time of year people used to start flocking the tanning beds desperately grasping onto every last bit of that summer touched look. Today most of us know how dangerous the fake-and-bake trend of the past is, however tanning salons everywhere are still opening and thriving. Thankfully advancements such as not allowing minors (under 18) to use indoor tanning salons, and explicit warning labels, have helped spread the word of their hazards.  These precautions may seem small but they seem to be a step in the right direction. "Prohibiting use of indoor tanning for all minors under the age of 18 is critical to preventing future skin cancers," said Judith Knox, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist at Springfield Clinic, Springfield, IL. "For years, minors with parental permission have been allowed to visit tanning salons, and research shows that the incidence of melanoma has increased. These trends indicate a problem that is too great to ignore."
Luckily in today’s beauty market there are thousands of items claiming to do help you achieve, accelerate and prolong your glow without UV exposure. You have bronzing powder, sunless lotions, creams and the ever more popular spray tan options.  Are all of these healthy and as safe as we are told?
The main thing to note is the ingredients. The most common ingredient in most of these products is “dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a color additive that darkens the skin by reacting with amino acids in the skin's surface”.  DHA is approved and regulated for use in imparting color to the human body, but only for external application.  Therefore, According to the FDA most bronzing powders, tinted make-up, sunless lotions, etc are approved for external use and safe as long as used in this way.
Spray tan is an ever increasing trend, and other than not being a cancer risk most people don’t know much about it. The product used for spray tan usually contains the same DHA color additive that the other products we use has. However, when receiving a spray tan, or misting tan, the product has access to your mouth, eyes and your lungs through inhalation.

The FDA provides some great questions to ask about these spray tan sessions:
-Are consumers protected from exposure in the entire area of the eyes, in addition to the eyes themselves?
-Are consumers protected from exposure on the lips and all parts of the body covered by mucous membrane?
-Are consumers protected from internal exposure caused by inhaling or ingesting the product?
“If the answer to any of these questions is "no," the consumer is not protected from the unapproved use of this color additive,” says the FDA.  No noted serious injuries or illness has been reported from the unapproved use, but it’s not 100% proven to be safe.  Long-term testing is still being done and reports are still unclear as to what this chemical can actually do.
It looks like the best option is currently at home self tanners or bronzers.  As spray tans are continually rising in popularity we ask that you consider the risk and take the necessary precautions if you decide to go this route (don’t be afraid to ask questions at your salon or to your dermatologist).
Want to opt for an at home version? Try our Germain recommended, and sold, Jane Iredale sunless self tanners or bronzers for a flawless sun kissed look.
Here’s to your safe, beautiful, FALL glow!

Hydrating is not just for the Heat

Can you feel that cool breeze in the air? Have you had your first Pumpkin Latte? Yes, it’s Fall. Maybe the season isn’t showing it’s colors so much here in the Lowcountry yet, but we all know it’s that time of year… how? It’s football season!! Whether you are cheering on Carolina or Clemson, pulling for the Panthers, or your own home team, everyone has a case of Football Frenzy this time of year.

With the weather cooling down and tailgate tents going up one thing that is easy to forget is to HYDRATE. We don’t mean with your favorite cocktail, but with actual water. You would be amazed at the effects dehydration, not only has on your health, but also for your skin!
Dehydration occurs when a person loses more fluid than they take in. The common rule of thumb is to drink 8 glasses of water a day… but we also all know we aren’t made from cookie cutters and that doesn’t simply work for each of us. The standard to go by is to drink half of your body weight in ounces per day (If you are 150 pounds you should drink 75 ounces of water daily, or about 9.5 cups of water). We mentioned that your favorite cocktails don’t count, what about your daily tea or coffee? Unfortunately, no. Due to acidic levels and caffeine content water is actually used by your body to metabolize and digest these tasty goods.
Without water most organs cannot function properly: think liver and kidneys. Your skin is the largest organ on your body it needs hydration as much as the rest of you, even from the inside out. Healthy skin contains up to 20% water (dehydrated skin and dry skin are two different ailments, inside vs outside). If you are seeing uncommon signs of acne or unusually dry, worn, wrinkled skin, check your hydration… you could be not getting enough water in your daily diet. Increasing your water intake can simply reduce these symptoms and others as well (such as aches & pains, headaches, and fatigue).  If you feel like adding additional water to your diet doesn’t help visit your dermatologist to eliminate any serious conditions.
Continuous dehydration can also cause premature aging in the skin. When dehydrated skin loses its ability to retain moisture it affects the flow of fluids and nutrients within the skin’s cells, eventually, if not treated, these cells can become damaged. Without proper hydration your skin looses collagen- it literally dries out. Want the best kept anti-aging secret? Drink more water! Many of the latest beauty treatments and creams have collagen, which is a great ingredient (especially if you've neglected your hydration for too long), but the best way to replenish and sustain your natural collagen is to stay hydrated.
While cheering on your favorite teams this season, enjoying the cooler weather and all year round remember to carry that water with you (even if it’s between the cocktails)… it will do wonders.
Happy Fall from all of us at Germain Dermatology!

Restore a More Vibrant You!

September is here and the kids are back in school. For all the parents out there, the summer is a chance to reconnect with the kids and also enjoy that special time with them. But often as the summer winds down, we hear from many parents that it also is a time where both the kids and parents are ready for school to be back in session. Remember when you were a kid and the summer seemed to last forever?

But now that the kids are back to reading, writing and math (yes, we know arithmetic) - it's time to undo all that sun damage your delicate skin experienced over the summer. Below is a local mom of two, Lauren. As you can tell, Lauren is has melasma. Melasma is a dark skin discoloration that appears on sun-exposed areas of the face. Melasma is a very common skin disorder. Though it can affect anyone, young women with brownish skin tones are at greatest risk. Melasma is often associated with the female hormones estrogen and progesterone. It is especially common in pregnant women, women who are taking birth control pills (oral contraceptives) and women taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) during menopause. Sun exposure is also a strong risk factor for melasma. The condition is particularly common in tropical climates. You can read more about melasma here...

Lauren underwent a laser illumination peel and look at the dramatic difference! Wow!

 $100 per treatment or 6 for $500

Give yourself a fresh start with this medical grade form of microdermabrasion for sensitive skin.  The Dermasweep is a unique procedure that provides the use of soft bristles that sweep away the dead skin layer while infusing the skin simultaneously. This procedure has no down time and leaves you with immediate results of smoother and softer skin.
 $100 per treatment or 6 for $500

Reveal a clearer and more youthful you!  A mild chemical peel using Salicylic acid leaves your skin softer and your complexion clearer. Act Now on Acne

It's just about time for your teenager to head back to school. You've already taken care of the new school supplies and the new clothes so they can feel comfortable around their classmates while looking their best (and better than last year!). Only this year, something's different. Normally your son or daughter can't wait to show off his/her new gear and get back into the daily routine of being around friends...but not this year. His acne has flared up for the first time.

Of course he's embarrassed. He's searching for the quick fix while worrying about what others will think and say about him. As a parent, don't panic. Often times acne comes through genetics, so there's a good chance you or your spouse had to deal with a similar issue in your teenage years. Acne is also one of the most common skin conditions, so there's an equally good chance there are plenty of other teenagers in his school dealing with the same thing.

Acne occurs when hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. It will most commonly appear on the face, neck, chest, back and shoulders. Worst of all, it's annoyingly persistent. Just when you think you've got one area under control, another area tends to pop up.

Here's the good news...effective treatments are available — and the earlier treatment is started, the lower the risk of lasting physical and emotional damage. However, treatment is best handled by a professional. Self medicating (or picking at) acne will increase the chances of lasting, possibly permanent scars.
We treat countless numbers of acne patients each year ranging from men to women and from teenagers to adults. In fact, numbers indicate 85% of all teens will develop acne and 25% of those will have permanent scars. Adults aren't out of the woods either - 20% of adults will see signs of the skin condition.

One of the top keys to effective treatment is unquestionably to start it as early as possible. Don't hesitate to call our office today if you suspect acne is starting to flare up on your teenager's skin or your own.

We're here to help. Call us at (843) 881-4440.

Ultherapy® – We just can’t stop talking about it!

We are seeing some amazing results with Ultherapy®!  If you are thinking about a little lifting or some refreshing, you may definitely want to consider Ultherapy®.

Ultherapy® is a non-invasive treatment using therapeutic ultrasound technology to safely lift and tone skin without any downtime. Approved by the FDA for the neck, face and area, targeted sound waves pass directly below the surface of the skin to “heat” the deep support layers to tighten and firm loose or sagging areas which have lost their elasticity and firmness over time.  By renewing and reconditioning the skin from within, whether necks tightened, jowls and brows lifted, eyes widened, Ultherapy® gives a more refreshed look overall.

Ultherapy® stimulates your body to produce COLLAGEN.  It is the combination of tissue contraction during treatment that encourages the production and building of new collagen to counter the effects of gravity and time, resulting in a significant lifting of the skin.  The formation of new collagen occurs during the 60-90 days following treatment, as tired collagen is replaced with new elastic collagen. While the results do not duplicate surgery, the visible improvements make Ultherapy® a compelling option for those who want some lifting but do not want or are not ready to undergo an extensive procedure.  It is also a great option to remedy early changes as well as for maintenance after a surgical procedure.

A viewing screen of the ultrasound image allows Dr. Germain to see precisely what energy level is being delivered to the targeted area for a focused, custom approach.  The area is assessed with ultrasound imaging before the system is activated and energy applied.  Each treatment last 30-60 minutes, depending which area or areas will be treated.

Without disruption to the skin, some visible improvements may be noticed immediately however, complete results from lifting and toning present within 2-3 months.  Results last 1-2 years.  Touch up treatments can help keep pace with the aging process, which varies by the individual. Most patients only need one treatment; however some may benefit from multiple treatments depending upon how much laxity they have and their body’s own biological response to the ultrasound and collagen-building process.

Ultherapy® is different from lasers in that it address the deep layers which lend support to the skin and stimulates the production of collagen.  Lasers typically address the superficial layers of the skin.  Depending upon what outcome is desired, Ultherapy® and a laser treatment may be quite complementary. Ultherapy® may also be used in conjunction with Botox® or other fillers.

A Few Things to Note:

  • No downtime.  This non-invasive procedure allows you to return to your normal activities right away.  Anesthesia is not necessary.
  • Some tingling and usually non-painful sensations will be felt during the process, which is the focused ultrasound energy being delivered below the surface of the skin.  Sensations vary by patient, are temporary and are an indication the collagen-building process has been initiated.
  • Some patients do experience mild and temporary redness, swelling, tingling or tenderness to the touch following treatment however, these results are temporary and usually resolved an hour or so after treatment.
  • Ultherapy® best addresses mild to moderate loose or sagging skin.

CoolSculpt® Your Way to Lower Body Fat and a Better Looking Body

CoolSculpt® Your Way to Lower Body Fat and a Better Looking Body

“Wow!” “Seriously?!” you may be thinking…  Well, Yes!

In a one-hour procedure without pills, supplements, special diets or intense workout regimes, an innovative non-surgical treatment is available to remove those trouble spots that seem impervious to healthy changes in diet and solid workout programs.

Developed by two Harvard scientists who observed that cold can be applied to remove fat, criolypolysis or, CoolSculpting®, is a technology used to cool fat cells to temperatures that trigger their natural death.  As lipids and fats crystallize faster than other cells and are more vulnerable to cooling than the surrounding tissues, there is no damage to skin, nerves or other tissue.  When delivering prolonged, controlled cooling to an area, fat cell death and elimination will be produced naturally over time.  Over the following weeks and months, the fat cells begin to shrivel and die until the patient’s own metabolism eliminates them from the body.  The patient’s fat layer will be reduced significantly, giving the patient visible and measurable results in the targeted area.

Whether stubborn inches around the abdomen or leg area is simply a result of genetics or lifestyle habits, CoolSculpting® is an effective way to get rid of fat for good.  It is especially appealing to those who would not normally consider a cosmetic procedure or for those who don’t want the downtime and risks associated with surgery.

Each treatment cycle lasts for one hour and does not require local or other anesthesia. Patient’s may feel slight discomfort for the first five minutes of the treatment as the cooling device comes into contact with the skin and begins to freeze the tissues.  After about ten minutes, the patient may feel slightly numb as the treatment continues.  Patients are able to resume regular activities or go back to work upon leaving the office.  Results are generally seen within a few months of treatment.  CoolSculpting® by Zeltiq is clinically proven and FDA approved.

Ideal candidates are generally those with stubborn pockets of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise – love handles, muffin tops, spare tires, inner or outer thigh bulges – problem areas that are difficult to exercise away without extreme fitness or diet programs.

“I have my body back – the body I had in my 20’s!”

Patients who have undergone CoolSculpting® tend to talk about what they have gained, rather than the fat they have lost.  From “I finally look good again; It’s the real me,” to “My clothes fit better,” patients report an increase in personal confidence, Keep in mind, once fat cells are eliminated, they are gone forever.  However, attention will still need to be taken in regards to a healthy diet and fitness program as to not generate new fat cells or increase the size of those still there.  Fortunately, most patients find their amazing results the impetus to continue taking care of themselves in order to retain their new look.

If you’re struggling to lose body fat from particular areas of your body, please set up a consultation with us to learn whether CoolSculpting® by Zeltiq is right for you. We are proud to be South Carolina’s first and most experienced practice to offer CoolSculpting®.

Hot Tips For The Best Results from Your Age-Fighting Products

We love the results we are seeing on those who are using the Germain Rx product line. Designed exclusively for the needs of Dr. Germain’s patients, the line includes cleansers, sunscreens, body and anti-aging products you will love.  We’d love to have you consult with us on the best skin care and anti-aging routine for your skin.  We understand you may be using and enjoying some other products as well.  In any case, we have a few hot tips on how to get the absolute best results from your anti-aging products.

Find The Right Blend of Products
Using too many products and anti-aging ingredients on your skin can be irritating and make the signs of aging more noticeable. For best results overall, consult with a dermatologist or aesthetician who can properly evaluate your skin to ensure you have an effective and safe routine to bring out your skin’s radiance.

Give The Product Time to Work
Despite some claims, most age-fighting products do not work overnight. While a moisturizer can plump up fine lines in a few days, most products take at least six weeks to work and give optimum results.

Use The Product As Directed
Some products contain active ingredients which are too harsh or do not work as well if too much is utilized.  Applying more than directed can cause clogged pores, a blotchy complexion, or other unwanted effects.

Avoid Products That Sting
Tingling, stinging, or burning do not mean the active ingredients are working – it often means the product is irritating to your skin.  Note: Some products prescribed by a dermatologist may cause stinging or burning. In fact, to get more noticeable results, the skin may be injured in order to reveal fresher, more youthful skin. When supervised by a dermatologist, this can be safe and effective. Pain and stinging should not occur if using an over-the-counter product.

Continue Using, If You Want to Continue Seeing Results
People often believe that once they get the results they want, they can stop using the product.  To continue seeing results, you must continue using the product.

Do Not Tan
Tanning from the sun, a tanning bed, or sun lamp exposes you to harmful UV rays, which can accelerate aging by causing wrinkles, age spots, and a blotchy complexion.  Tanning while using products with anti-aging ingredients can aggravate and damage the skin.  Sunscreen is essential to prevent damage from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays.  Use a sunscreen with broad-spectrum (UVA and UVB protection) coverage with a minimum SPF 30.

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize
Along with wearing sunscreen, we cannot emphasize this enough.  A good moisturizer traps water in the skin, which can help reduce the appearance of some fine lines (not deep lines), making your complexion look brighter and younger.

A little attention to a few small details can make all the difference when showing off your beautiful skin!  To consult with Dr Germain for your best age-fighting skin routine, please call us at (843) 881-4440.
